Free surface stability of liquid metal plasma facing components

چکیده
An outstanding concern raised over the implementation of liquid metal plasma facing components in fusion reactors is the potential for ejection of liquid metal into the fusion plasma. The influences of Rayleigh–Taylor-like and Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instabilities were experimentally observed and quantified on the thermoelectric-driven liquid-metal plasmafacing structures (TELS) chamber at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. To probe the stability boundary, plasma currents and velocities were first characterized with a flush probe array. Subsequent observations of lithium ejection under exposure in the TELS chamber exhibited a departure from previous theory based on linear perturbation analysis. The stability boundary is mapped experimentally over the range of plasma impulses of which TELS is capable to deliver, and a new theory based on a modified set of the shallow water equations is presented which accurately predicts the stability of the lithium surface under plasma exposure.

Modelling of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and splashing of melt layers from plasma-facing components in tokamaks
Plasma-facing components (PFCs) in tokamaks are exposed to high-heat loads during abnormal events such as plasma disruptions and edge-localized modes. The most significant erosion and plasma contamination problem is macroscopic melt splashes and losses from metallic divertor plates and wall materials into core plasma. The classical linear stability analysis is used to assess the initial conditi...

The development of solid plasma-facing components (PFCs) that can withstand high heat and particle fluxes during normal and abnormal events has proven to be a difficult task for future power-producing magnetically confined reactors. Solid PFC cannot be reliably used because of the large erosion losses during normal and off-normal events such as disruptions and their consequences. The use of liq...

In a fusion reactor, the ability to use liquids as plasma-facing components (PFCs) depends on their interaction with the plasma and the magnetic field. One important issue for the moving liquid is the ability to entrain particles that strike the PFC surface (helium and hydrogen isotopes) while accommodating high heat loads. To study this problem, an analytical model and a two-dimensional compre...

The use of flowing liquid metal streams or “liquid walls” as a plasma contact surface is a very attractive option and has received considerable attention over the past several years both in the plasma physics and fusion engineering programs. A key issue for the feasibility of flowing liquid metal plasma facing component (PFC) systems, lies in their magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) behavior. The spatia...

Surface and structural damage to plasma-facing components (PFCs) due to the frequent loss of plasma con®nement is a serious problem for the tokamak reactor concept. The plasma energy deposited on these components during loss of con®nement causes signi®cant surface erosion, possible structural failure, and frequent plasma contamination. Surface damage consists of vaporization, spallation, and li...
